“Semana Santa” Fujifilm x100f, Andalusia, Spain

"I’m always interested in what digital photography adds to the narrative of fine art. It’s an instantaneous, wholly intangible thing that is created literally immediately with a click of a button. I like to compose images that are self conscious of their artificiality, especially when framing ancient imagery." (Bartel, 2024)

"I Drew inspiration from a year of travel and studying art history abroad in Florence. These photos were shot during my March break, when I backpacked around Spain. I started off solo traveling Sevilla and Granada, in the South, and was fascinated by how the religious art and architecture was so visually different from the Italian churches I was more acquainted with. The first night I was alone in Sevilla, I was walking to try to find a Flamenco tablao when all the sudden the narrow cobblestone streets were clogged with people. It was a religious procession, I realized once I smelled incense and saw somber men hoisting pillar candles. The bearers of the crucifix came into view and I had to keep shooting photos the whole time as I stood riveted by the pageantry of the procession." (Bartel, 2024)
